A scientific event for pharmacists was organized by Chiesi Hellas at the Acropolis Museum, on Monday 11 April 2016. The event highlighted the important role played by the pharmacist both in the successful onset and completion of the treatment of patients. “Patient compliance with treatment is a constant challenge”.

210 million patients worldwide suffer from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), which is expected to be the third leading cause of death by 2020, following heart disease and stroke. It is estimated that patients’ compliance with treatment in Respiratory Diseases can improve survival by about 15% and reduce the number of exacerbations of the disease per year. However, compliance rates among COPD and asthma patients are among the lowest and appear to be drastically reduced as treatment months progress.

These data were presented at an event by Chiesi Hellas, held at the Acropolis Museum on 11 April 2016. The event was attended by invited pharmacists and the speakers were Dr. E. Gizopoulou, Pulmonologist, Director of the Pulmonary Clinic, Metropolitan Hospital, Dr. G. Kontopyrgias, MD, MSc, FCCP, Pulmonologist, Metropolitan Hospital, and Ms. K. Boulougari, Trainer for Transformative Learning.

The event highlighted the important role played by the pharmacist both in the successful onset and completion of the treatment of patients. “Patient compliance with treatment is a constant challenge. With the right education, guidance and support from the physician and the pharmacist, the patient acquires the strength to follow systematic treatment, improving the quality of his life. Our goal is to follow a patient-centered treatment model that, with the cooperation of the patient and health professionals, the physician and pharmacist, ensures treatment success. In this model, the pharmacist’s role is of utmost significance” stated Mr. Stavros G. Theodorakis, President & CEO of Chiesi Hellas and Vice President of the Hellenic Association of Pharmaceutical Companies (SFEE) in the field of scientific matters.

According to the data presented by Dr. Gizopoulou, many times errors are made in the treatment, which are due to inadequate education of patients or weaknesses of the treatment devices. The doctor referred, inter alia, to the importance of the lack of coordination of the inhalation/activation of the device and the need for sensory confirmation of receiving the dose, which are usual problems during the use of inhalers, underlining the imperative need for patient education in their use.

Next, Dr. Kontopyrgias referred to the role of N-acetylcysteine in treating respiratory diseases. Particular stress was made to its mucus-loosening actions in cases of acute and chronic bronchopulmonary illnesses (bronchitis, emphysema, tracheobronchitis, chronic asthmatic bronchitis). Emphasis was also made to its antioxidant properties. “N-acetylcysteine is effective in reducing oxidative stress and inflammation of the lungs, caused by cigarette smoke and pollution”, stated Dr. Kontopyrgias.

The event closed with an interactive workshop by Ms. Boulougari, aiming to show that, beyond the pharmacist’s scientific knowledge and technical skills, there is a need for new skills, attitudes and behaviors that focus on the human-centered dimension of the profession - showing, in this way, their leading role in modern care and confirming that Pharmaceutical Care is an integral part of the patient’s compassionate care and empowers the patient within the treatment process.
