Modern laboratory and technological equipment ensures an upgraded educational and research environment

Tuesday 22 January 2013. A modern and well-equipped laboratory is now available to the research team of Associate Professor Antonios Koulouris, a faculty member of the laboratory of Synthetic Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Department of Pharmacy of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, thanks to the support of Chiesi Hellas. Today, Tuesday 22 January 2013, the blessing of the renovated laboratory took place. The blessing was attended by professors and postgraduate students of the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Faculty Director and Professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Mr. Georgios Foskolos, Mr. Antonios Koulouris, Associate Professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and other faculty members, while attending on behalf of Chiesi Hellas, was the CEO Mr. Stavros Theodorakis and Ms. Vasiliki Lambrousi, Market Access & Regulatory Affairs Manager.

Chiesi Hellas worked closely with the research team of Mr. Antonios Koulouris to meet the laboratory’s most important needs and to ensure improved laboratory research and educational facilities and to ensure healthy working conditions. The new modernized laboratory includes modern and functional work stations, with all necessary water, gas, vacuum, two laboratory gas outlets and a special reagent storage cabinet. At the same time, it has been equipped with two new multi-core computers that help to perform demanding biomolecular simulations, resulting in the achievement and publication of significant research results. This collaboration dates back to 2011 and continues uninterruptedly, supporting the research work of this research team.

The CEO of Chiesi Hellas Mr.  Stavros Theodorakis, said: “Investing in Research, Development and Education is a priority for Chiesi, both in Greece and abroad, with the aim of discovering pioneering therapies to ensure health. With this initiative of modernizing part of the Synthetic Pharmaceutical Chemistry Laboratory, we implement our vision by enabling scientists and researchers to conduct their research with greater ease, safety, speed and accuracy, using modern laboratory and technological equipment. For Chiesi Hellas it is our duty to contribute to science and society by wanting to leave a positive footprint and legacy for the future. We commit ourselves to continue to support the scientific community’s efforts by faithfully following the philosophy of the company for sustainable development and education”.

Associate Professor Mr. Antonis Koulouris noted that, “The donation of Chiesi Hellas ensures our research team a daily, meaningful and tangible result. Our research activity has become more modern, functional, more effective but the laboratory environment is now more friendly, as working conditions are better, more humane and hygiene conditions are clearly improved. At the same time, it is possible to produce more and more modern research projects, while a modern laboratory is a pole of attraction for students who want to carry out postgraduate research. It is very encouraging in our days to have moves to support university research in our country”.

About Chiesi

January 1998 marked the year when the subsidiary of Chiesi, an Italian pharmaceutical company headquartered in Parma, was established in Greece and has been performing enviable research work, particularly in the field of respiratory diseases. A number of interesting products complement and strengthen in recent years the arsenal of health scientists and provide reliable solutions to serious diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cystic fibrosis and respiratory distress of newborns. Today, 15 years later, Chiesi Hellas, with already more than five times its staff and more than twenty times its sales, is a well organized company with a strong presence in the Greek pharmaceutical market, with high rates of growth that are a serious asset for an even better future. The Group inaugurated in 2011 at its headquarters in Parma a state of the art R&D Center (Research and Technology), which was awarded in 2012 for its pioneering and ecological construction as well as for the sustained support of the research of new therapies.

A few words about the work of the research team whose laboratory was renovated and about the synthetic pharmaceutical chemistry laboratory

The synthetic pharmaceutical chemistry laboratory belongs to the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Department of Pharmacy, University of Athens. The research team of Associate Professor Antonios Koulouris works at the recently renovated laboratory and works: a) in the design and synthesis of inhibitors of the mutant influenza, b) in the study of the way of action of these molecules on a molecular level with computational simulations, c) in the discovery of new inhibitors of the adenosine receptor with computational simulations, d) in the study of physical organic chemistry issues. Recently, Mr. Antonios Koulouris’ research team has found inhibitors of the pandemic mutated influenza, for the first time.

A few words about the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry

The Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry of the Department of Chemistry, University of Athens, with Head of the Department Mr. Georgios Foskolos, has a highly demanding postgraduate program of advanced courses; postgraduate students must prepare an advanced two-year research work on the design, composition, study of the structure and activity of small molecules and their pharmacology or their analysis in pharmaceutical compositions or biological samples. The program transforms postgraduate students into trained research potential. The project is carried out by highly qualified research faculty members, publishing high-level work at international level. The faculty members are the professors: Georgios Foskolos, Georgios Fytas, Panagiotis Marakos, Nikolais Pouli, Andreas Tsotinis, Emmanuel Mikros, Anna Kakoulidou, associate professors: Ioannis Loukas, Antonis Koulouris, Aggeliki Kourounaki, Eirini Panteri, and the assistant professors: Ioannis Kostakis and Ioanna Andreadou, the Lecturers: Evaggelos Gkikas, Grigoris Zoidis and Ioannis Dotsikas. The work of retired professors Nikolaos Koulouris, Aikaterini Vyza etc. was also significant.
